Generalities

This field is compound for 100.282 hectares, according to it’s measures.

It is located in the Independence Department of the province of La Rioja, 20 Km to the South of the PATQUIA station of the "National Railroad General Belgrano", which is part of the "Merced of Father Luna"

General characteristics

Location:

The field is located in the Independence Department of the province of La Rioja, in between the 30° 10' and 30° 30' parallels; and the 66° 55' and 67° 20' meridians; not much more than 20 km to the South of PATQUIA, Its limits to the east is 4km from the meridian that passes through Patquia, and its limits to the West is almost on the meridian that goes by Paganzo. Its North limit is 3 km to the South of Old Patquia, and its limit South is 15 km of the parallel that goes by San Agustín (Prov of San Juan). The vertex South-west, is 3,9 km from the provincial borders of and with San Juan's County interprovincial de y con la Provincia de San Juan; to the Nor-west, 1 scarce km of the new road that links Patquia with Paganzo and continues to San Agustín of the Fertile Valley in San Juan's province.

Roads of Access

The old national road that crosses the field diagonally and that it links the town of Patquia with San Agustín of the Fertile Valley, province of San Juan, it is in a regular state of conservation.

The new route of Patquia to San Agustín of the Fertile Valley, runs North-South to less than 1 km of the boundary This of the field 1 km del lindero Esta del campo, its in a good state of conservation, having an appropriate endowment of personal of maintenance vial, for its care and conservation.

There is another recently finished road, asphalted also, that practically links Patquia with Paganzo in a straight line. This road facilitates the access to the Nor-west part of the field. There are varied paths that travel the field.

It would be necessary to build access roads running from east to west that will connect the main route with the east part of the field.

Characteristic of the Field

The field is located South-west of the mountains of Paganzo, and to the West of the Mountains of the Plains, it is of a somewhat gulch surface and it has great quantity of streams, many of which start and also end in the same field, and others that come from the Mountains of the Paganzo. As an element of importance, we can mention the River Moyano that crosses the field near its North vertex; the River Patquia that is born in the field and that it links to Los Colorados near Patquia. The River Colorado, formed by the River Paganzo and that of Angostura, is the most important, and will end after it unites with the Patquia. Finally, the River Carabato and the Algarrobal. All these rivers, take water in abundance in rainy seasons.

Climate

The climate is hot, quite dry; the humidity relatively mild. Temperature ranges from 60° to 78° f. The maximum temperature in the summer is of 44° the minimum of 5°. The régime of rains is from 400 to 500 mm per year, distributed in uneven form. Rains are scarce in the months of May to September, and more or less abundant from October to March. The predominant winds are from the North and West.

Hydrological possibilities

An underground stream that runs from Northeast to Southeast exists.

Agricultural and cattle farming Possibilities

In reference to this topic, it is necessary to consider two possible variants:

  1. Dry farming exploitation, in the valleys where the accumulation of water in the underground could allow this type of exploitation, according to the experiences of Dr. Antonio of the Vega, in the town of Tama, and what the Engineer Papadakis suggests, in the ecological map of the Republic Argentina.
  2. Exploitation with irrigable, by means of water captured in the underground, as they have been doing in neighboring properties with date plantations, olive groves, eucalyptus, etc.

The fields of La Rioja, especially those that are near the Mountains like the Merced of Father Luna, are the most fertile, for they accumulate more water. There the fields yield admirably; vine, olive tree, tobacco, cotton, almond tree, chestnut tree, sorghum, corn, medic, etc. This field is susceptible of producing big yields, mainly cattle, by means of a very organized colonization, with elements that would know how to take advantage of the rain water (dams) and the natural wealth of its lands.

Mining possibilities

By the materials disseminated in the underground, you can infer the possibility to find Wolfram (element of high strategic value) and Beryllium. What is sure is the presence of Plaster (it is visible) and Dolomite.

Natural grasses

They formed by a cebadilla similar to the "rooster eye" of the fields of the province of Córdoba. In closed field, it was possible to appreciate some sorghum fields that prosper under good conditions.

Other References

Experts appraisers in their report, classify the field as first category, among those in the same province, for agriculture and cattle raising.

The general aspect of the field is that of an immense valley between two hillsides that are those of the Fertile Valley, in the demarcation of San Juan's province and that of Paganzo for the North. With soft waves that extend toward the east, in some extensive plains with forests that have not been exploited yet, being calculated an average of 25 big trees per hectare, among those it prevails the white Quebracho, the Locust, the Retamo, the Chañar, Tala; etc.

PATQUIA is 431mts above sea level.

It range of temperatures: Jan/26°; feb/25°; Mar/22°; Apr/19°; May/15°; Jun/11°; Jul/11°; Agu/14°; Sep/17°; Oct/21°; Nov/24°; Dec/26°
